It's been almost a year since I've infected this site with one of my movie reviews. Well, the good times are over suckers. Super 8 is out (at least here in North America) and I've decided to break my silence. Has it been for the good, or bad? Read the ZGeek review to find out.

ArcadeAid is a viral promo for the up-coming 'Tron: Legacy' film, and if the film is half as cool as this it will be a winner.

The link takes you to an enormous pixel-art image which has 167 retro game images within it. All (all???) you have to do is identify them. If you login you can save your progress & go back for more.

Give it a go, it is maddeningly hard!

ARCADEAID and someone has downloaded the entire 5550x2830, 3mb image HERE, will make a great wallpaper or even poster for your RL wall.

We just learned that James Cameron is telling Hollywood that Fox made a "huge" donation to his environmental green fund, and in return he committed to making the Avatar sequel and threequel his next films. That also caused him to withdraw from Sony Pictures' Cleopatra with Angelina Jolie, even though he'd told the studio that he'd always wanted to film the Queen Of The Nile's story.

Cameron, who had always viewed AVATAR as the creation of a new world and mythology, will begin work on the scripts early next year with an eye towards commencing production later in 2011. Cameron will decide if he will shoot the films back-to-back after he completes the scripts, but the release of the first, as yet untitled sequel, is targeted for December 2014, with the third film contemplated for a December 2015 release.

Commented Cameron: "It is a rare and remarkable opportunity when a filmmaker gets to build a fantasy world, and watch it grow, with the resources and partnership of a global media company. AVATAR was conceived as an epic work of fantasy – a world that audiences could visit, across all media platforms, and this moment marks the launch of the next phase of that world. With two new films on the drawing boards, my company and I are embarking on an epic journey with our partners at Twentieth Century Fox. Our goal is to meet and exceed the global audience's expectations for the richness of AVATAR’s visual world and the power of the storytelling. In the second and third films, which will be self contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of AVATAR’s visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world. I'm looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild."

Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film will be called “The Dark Knight Rises” and though the Gotham City auteur isn’t ready to reveal the villain of his 2012 film, he did eliminate one of the big contenders: “It won’t be the Riddler,” Nolan said in an exclusive interview with Hero Complex.

Nolan was most eager to talk about the fact that Warner Bros. had agreed with his argument that the film should resist the current 3-D craze and instead use high-definition approaches and IMAX cameras to strike out on a different cinematic path than the stereoscopic technology that, for better or worse, has become the dominant conversation in the blockbuster sector.

As for the title, it shows the writer-director’s intention to keep his Bruce Wayne trilogy tightly stitched together. “We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones,” Nolan said cryptically. I had an odd thought: What if Nolan somehow brings back Harvey Dent? The only reason I even mention it is because, back during post-production on the second film, Nolan told me that the title “The Dark Knight” was just as much about Dent and his fall from the status of shining-knight civic crusader. Dent was plainly dead at the end of the last film, though, and Nolan has been intent on keeping his Gotham City film firmly rooted in a gritty gangland realism– this isn’t a franchise that has veered off into the supernatural or even much super-science.

    The good Nolan

Excellent news to read he's not buying into this 3D bollocks... sanity prevails.

Zack Snyder has been chosen to direct the new installment of Superman for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. Snyder was on a short list of directors that I recently revealed met with the studio as well as producers Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas. Other choices at the time included helmers Tony Scott, Matt Reeves, Jonathan Liebesman, and Duncan Jones. I think Snyder is an inspired choice. He is a cornerstone filmmaker for Warner Bros., a visual stylist whose efforts for the studio include 300, Watchmen, and the upcoming Sucker Punch.

Hayao Miyazaki is a name few Americans were familiar with just 10 years ago. Even less recognized was Studio Ghibli, the animation company Miyazaki helped found 25 years ago.

That all changed during the past decade. Even people who don't consider themselves anime fans find themselves watching movies such as Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro.

But the magic of Miyazaki could soon be extinguished.

In an interview with the Japanese publication Cut magazine, Miyazaki said it is possible Studio Ghibli may never make another movie again. Whether or not that actually happens all depends on the success of Ghibli's newest movie, The Borrower Arrietty, which is loosely based on Mary Norton's fantasy novel, The Borrowers.

The film has already been released to high praise in Japan, but it remains to be seen how well the film will fare at the American box office. And, therein lies the problem.

As popular as Miyazaki has become in the United States, Studio Ghibli has yet to see its films released in mainstream theaters.

Despite turning out one of this year's biggest turds in The Last Airbender, M. Night Shyamalan clearly still has clout in Hollywood, which is a good thing because otherwise we might not be able to enjoy such a taught and compelling little movie as Devil, which, as some have lampooned, comes "from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan". Read the ZGeek review to get the lowdown of one of this year's best small films.

Just as the MPAA is preparing to offer movies to customers at home while they're still in theaters by limiting playback to DRM-protected digital outputs only, the HDCP protocol they rely on may have been cracked wide open. All devices that support HDCP, like Blu-ray players, set-top boxes and displays with HDMI inputs, have their own set of keys to encrypt and decrypt protected data and if keys for a particular device are compromised, they can be revoked by content released in the future which will then refuse to play. Now, posts have been floating around on Twitter about a supposed "master key" which renders that protection unusable since it allows anyone to create their own source and sink keys.

Who discovered this and by what technique isn't immediately clear, but as early as 2001 security researcher Niels Ferguson proposed that it could be easily revealed by knowing the keys of less than 50 different devices. Hardware HDCP rippers like the HDfury2 and DVIMAGIC have been around for a while and various AACS cracks easily allow rips of Blu-ray discs but if this information is what it claims to be, then the DRM genie could be permanently out of the bag allowing perfect high definition copies of anything as long as the current connector standards are around. While it's unlikely your average user would flash their capture device with a brand new key and get to copying uncompressed HD audio and video, keeping those early releases off of the torrents in bit perfect quality could go from difficult to impossible.

The question of whether actor Joaquin Phoenix is a celebrity joke or the puppeteer in an expensive prank on the movie industry has left the Venice Film Festival paralysed with doubt after the screening of the "documentary" about his career switch to rap music.

I'm Still Here, the directorial debut of fellow actor Casey Affleck - Phoenix's brother-in-law - left audiences looking for the hidden camera. Affleck denied he directed a ruse after his film was screened out of competition yesterday.

"Elliptically, I would say . . . I sincerely don't want to influence people's interpretation. I can tell you there is no hoax. It makes me think of Candid Camera or something," he said.

Steve Johnson’s studio made a name for itself in the film industry with its originality of design, attention to detail and innovative use of materials. The studio drew initial acclaim with memorable effects like the surreal demise of Freddy Krueger in Renny Harlin’s “NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET IV”. With success came increasingly challenging and more prestigious projects, including the creation of his now famous, fully articulated, translucent, self-illuminated underwater beings for James Cameron’s “THE ABYSS”.

With projects as diverse as SPECIES, AMISTAD, BICENTENNIAL MAN, the creation of the unforgettable Putterman family for DURACELL BATTERIES, Johnson has been responsible for a wide range of practical effects. Recent works including BLADE 2, STAR TREK: NEMESIS, DREAMCATCHER, THE CAT IN THE HAT, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN and SPIDER-MAN II have secured Steve Johnson as “the” state of the art leader in his field.

Elemental LLC is auctioning a once in a lifetime chance to own a piece of movie making history. Currently the items are being sold directly from Steve Johnson's personal archive spanning his entire career. Most of these items are typically lost in time, never to be seen again. Toy sales stopped George Lucas from ending his Star Wars saga on a downbeat note, the film's original producer has revealed. As Lucas announced that his saga was finally coming to Blu-ray, and gave fans a sneak peak of a lost opening to Return of the Jedi, Gary Kurtz, who produced Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, talked about the film's lost ending.
Kurtz told The Los Angeles Times that Lucas had originally planned a much darker ending to Return of the Jedi: Han Solo was to die and a battle-weary Luke Skywalker was to have walked off alone "like Clint Eastwood in the spaghetti westerns".

What is this movie, and why is it so awesome? This trailer, which I swear I saw sometime last year, is hilarious, and you don’t have to take my word for it! Watch the trailer below! Any comedy staring our main man from Firefly is pure genius. Alan Tudyk has a huge range, from the soft emotional guy in Firefly to the high on lsd brother in Death at a Funeral (which they ended up butchering with a horrible remake.) Speaking of butchering, watch the clip below. Go to the site, subscribe to their feed. Lets get this distributed. And please, for the sake of awesomeness… do not torrent it.

Priest is an upcoming futuristic superhero vampire-western horror film loosely based on the manhwa, the Korean name for comics and print cartoons, of the same name. The film is directed by Scott Stewart and stars Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet and Maggie Q.

Set 100 years from now after the war between Christians and Satanists, the film is about a Christian warrior priest (Paul Bettany) who disobeys church law by teaming with a young sheriff (Cam Gigandet) and a priestess (Maggie Q) to track down a cult of vampire outlaws that is led by a former Christian and now a Satanic priest, Black Hat, who kidnapped his niece before they brainwash her.
