News Limited chief executive Kim Williams wants tougher laws to stop “scumbag theft” by the “copyright kleptomaniacs of the digital age”, saying piracy was undermining the business of cultural production more than ever.
Mr Williams used his keynote address to the Australian International Movie Convention on the Gold Coast today to call for new copyright laws to better protect digital property rights.
He said the “mind-boggling” level of illegal downloading over the internet would only worsen after the rollout of the high-speed National Broadband Network.
“Right now, on the brink of a new era of digital uptake through the establishment of the NBN, is the time to act to strengthen our digital copyright laws and bring them into the digital age,” he said.
“Today, on behalf of large media companies like mine … I am asking for a new set of copyright laws that protect our work from theft. And I’m asking for copyright laws that will also protect the singers of songs, writers of books and producers of games.

Fuck this guy. Laws will do fuck all. What WILL stop piracy is a cheap and easy service that allows access to TV and movie shows. Just like Steam did for games. I don’t know about you guys, but for me and a lot of my mates, Steam killed game piracy dead. Legit games, cheap and easy.
But morons with no idea and huge media outlets on their side will push for laws to make more criminals and they won’t solve the problem. Piracy will always be around. But if they make getting stuff legitimately easier than piracy then they will win. So fuck this guy.
