Why law should stay away from Trolling

You may have noticed that this war on trolling by celebrities and morons is fucked up and wrong. And it also pisses me off because it looks like we’re going to get more laws.

You see as soon as law gets involved, it gets nasty.

Sometimes, epic trolling NEEDS to be done. I’m not talking about those unfunny wankers who are just out to insult. I’m talking about the gentlemanly art of trolling.

Making laws against it could mean the end of epicness like this.

Whilst I agree with your sentiment here, Pirate, the Jessie Slaughter example is not a good one to highlight your cause.

Was the girl an obnoxious little bitch who deserved a good trolling? Yes. Absolutely. What she ended up receiving was in no way justified and should remain illegal.

She received multiple death, rape and other violent threats, her home address and phone number were published online and she and her family received threatening phone calls and unwanted visitors throughout the nights that followed.

That’s not trolling, in the gentlemanly sense.

Let’s be clear on this.
There is absolutely no need for any new law.
It is currently illegal to do ANYTHING on the net which offends ANYONE.
"Using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence" is the offence. Google it.

Even if what you write is true, you can still find yourself caught up in this legislation if what you write causes offence. In my case, I had a landlord steal from my girlfriend and I, admit to it, and because I referred to it on my blog, I found myself caught up in a two year legal battle because of that law.

Needless to say, quite a lot of what gets said here on ZGeek would fall under the realm of ’cause offence’. But here, there’s an underlying attitude that if you get hurt, you should go cry in a corner, not involve the plods. And that’s an ingredient for a healthier community. But from a purely legal standpoint, such discussions are illegal.

I’ll spare you all my rant about free speech, and how we do not have it. I am sure most of you have the braincells to piece that together yourselves.

Great collection of videos, perfect when bored at midnight… many laughs were had specially the Jessi Slaughter one! The Scatman backing track in the last one was a highlight too for sure. Bee bup bup budup bo!
